Default following the national curriculum or not ?

Hi there, i'm very new to home education, so please forgive me if i type something i shouldn't. As from September I will be HE my son, who is currently in yr 2 at school. I'm thinking of trying to teach him from the national curriculum, for the next 2 years until he is old enough to start middle school. (he's in a very small community school, where certain children do not know how to behave, therefore the class suffers). So my question is: is it worth buying the curriculum packages i've seen for yr 3 & 4, or can it all be found for free on the net with alittle bit of searching? also is it fairly easy to teach or would you recommend hiring a tutor ?
Any help would be much appreciated
