Response by John which I'll quote in full - he has them squirming...

Quote:
Dear Education Services

I am grateful for your response.

1. Thank you for the link to the Falkirk High School prospectus. I
note that on page 11 in the section ‘School Cafeteria’ it states:

“Every pupil is issued with a Young Scot card at Primary School.
This can be used as a lunch swipe card. They must keep this
throughout their time at Falkirk High School...”

This is clear prima face evidence that Kenneth Roy was quoting
correctly in his Scottish Review article (3 Mar. 11), and that
students at Falkirk High School are being issued with compulsory
Young Scot cards. And also that they are unable to purchase school
meals without this card.

2. I note that you do not deny the truth of the first sentence in
the above statement, viz. that all pupils are being issued with
Young Scot cards. In other words, there is no choice in the matter,
all pupils are forced to take them.

With regard to access to school meals in Falkirk schools, you refer
to an alternative “blank swipe card” which can be used instead.
There is no mention of this option anywhere in the Falkirk High
School prospectus.

However, I note that you say: “The School Prospectus summarises
information for new parents but more detailed information is also
issued.”

3. You state that “Parents are made aware of the systems operating
for payment of school lunches by the individual schools concerned
and the information provided will vary by school.” You do not,
however, provide any evidence that this is in fact taking place.

Accordingly:

1. Could you please now confirm whether the statement in the
Falkirk High School prospectus:

“Every pupil is issued with a Young Scot card at Primary School.”

is correct or incorrect.

2. For the current year’s intake into Falkirk Primary School could
you confirm that all the parents were explicitly informed that it
was not necessary for pupils to use the Young Scot card to pay for
school meals.

3. Could you provide me with a copy of the relevant (dated) letter
or instruction to parents as evidence that they were indeed
properly and clearly informed.

4. Are there any compulsory uses of the Young Scot card In Falkirk
schools?

Thanking you.

Yours faithfully

Dr John Welford

John has been asked by Falkirk Council to set up a new FOI for his request for clarification and new questions arising from their response...

Oh what a surprise, not! Glad to see him pursuing this so vigorously.

New link for Lanarkshire's Girfec leaflet.

Maybe these links will stick around a bit longer?

Default forthcoming girfec legislation

Mike Russell recently...

Quote:
We set out a package of measures to take this forward. One of those elements will be to build on our investments in early years by investing in a Change Fund, part of which will deliver a new generation of family centres [Susan Deacon].

We plan to introduce legislation early on in this Parliamentary term to ensure investment in early years is not an optional extra.

We also intend to go further - to explore legislative options to ensure Getting It Right For Every Child is firmly embedded in the whole of the public sector.

We will be consulting with stakeholders over the summer to define where the legislation can have the most impact and support the positive developments that are happening. We are open to views.

And, because we recognise the importance of the home environment, an early priority will be the development of a national parenting strategy that encourages agencies to work together to support parents.
