Sentencing him to a 12-month jail sentence, suspended for two years, Judge Michael Lawson QC said: "This young girl found your apparent concern such she became attracted to you.

"It was just that situation that the law requires you to exercise absolute control. You didn't.

"You chose to indulge yourself by inappropriate language, inappropriate gestures and conversation.

"You groomed her, as the jury found, with other matters no doubt in mind but you were acquitted of the other two offences.

"You have done damage to that child, you have done damage to that family who can ill afford to have the extra problems associated with your selfish behaviour."

A nursery school was forced to shut today over claims a young child had been sexually assaulted.

Detectives investigating the alleged incident in Aberystwyth, Mid Wales, have arrested a suspect.

The nursery is registered to care for 20 children, mostly aged two and three, and has been operating for 30 years.

Officers have seized a computer and mobile phone in the case echoing the investigation into the Little Ted's Nursery in Plymouth which led to the imprisonment of nursery assistant Vanessa George last year.

She had admitted sexually abusing children in her care and swapping images of the abuse with two other paedophiles.

The tearful leader of the playgroup embroiled in the latest scandal said last night: 'We don't want to talk at the moment. I can't confirm anything.'

The suspect, who has not been named, was released on police bail pending further enquiries.

A spokesman for Dyfed-Powys Police said: 'The playgroup has temporarily closed pending further investigation and this will be reviewed daily.

'We take any allegation of this kind seriously and have specially trained officers to deal with any victims and any alleged offenders.'

The force refused to confirm whether the suspect is male or female or whether they worked at the nursery.

The playgroup is registered with the Care and Social Services Inspectorate Wales, a body set-up by the Welsh Assembly.

An Assembly spokesman said: 'We are aware of the alleged incident, which is the subject of a police investigation and therefore we are unable to comment further.'

All the children attending the nursery come from Aberystwyth and surrounding villages and are looked after by four staff in total.

In 2007 an inspection report found the playgroup had 'good features' with 'no important shortcomings'.

The nursery's website says: "St Padarn's Playgroup is the only voluntary playgroup in Aberystwyth.

"Voluntary playgroups are run by parents for families.

"This means that the Playgroup is organised with families in mind, and parents have a big say in how it is run.

The widening public scandal began last month with allegations that three priests at the elite Canisius Jesuit high school in Berlin had sexually abused students there in the 1970s and 1980s. In the midst of a steadily growing uproar over the handling of that case, the German magazine Der Spiegel published an article over the weekend that said nearly 100 clerics and laypeople had been suspected of abusing children and teenagers nationwide since 1995.

Ex-councillor on child porn charges

A FORMER Labour Party councillor who was the chairman of a board of primary school governors has appeared in court charged with child pornography offences.

Keith Potts is accused of having 24 indecent pictures of youngsters on his home computer.

Teacher guilty of pupil sex abuse

A teacher has been found guilty of 10 charges of sexually abusing pupils at a primary school in West Sussex.
This is an old case from 2007 but pretty vile.

Peter Shotton, 55, who taught maths at Bewbush Community Primary in Crawley, committed the offences against three boys over a period of 10 years.

He will be placed on the sex offenders register and "almost certainly" be disqualified from working with children, the court heard.

Why only 'almost certainly'?

"It is extremely rare for a teacher to be at the centre of such accusations and Mr Shotton's conviction should not be allowed to reflect on the profession as a whole."

So so so depressing, why are millions being spent on worthless CRB checks

A teacher has been charged with a string of sex offences against two teenage girls in Greater Manchester.
The 28-year-old is accused of 18 counts of sexual activity with a child, along with abusing his position of trust, threats to kill and common assault.
