Default Lichfield mayor resigns school role over government 'red tape'

THE MAYOR of Lichfield has resigned as governor of a city school in protest over government demands for him to submit to a Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) check even though he has no contact with children.

Councillor Terry Thomas walked out of Chadsmead Primary School's meeting of governors last week frustrated at what he calls 'wasteful red tape'.

Cllr Thomas told the Mercury: "I have resigned because the Government now requires all school governors to have CRB checks, but why?

"As a governor of 10 months I have never been in the same room as any of the pupils.

"There is no issue of the protection of children if adults are never with them."
