Hi folks
I just wanted to enquire if anyone knows of any home ed meetings for parents in the Glasgow area. My son has Asperger's syndrome and I am looking to home ed him for when he is supposed to start secondary school in 2 years. I know I'll have to provide proof of provision and I would need help in getting to know what exactly this is and would need some help in how to do this as I think I'll get loads of hassle from education dept because of my son's condition. Looking forward to your replies, thanks x |

Hi,
My son has just finished 1st year. I took him out of school for 3 years and of his own volition decided he wanted to try Secondary School. He had a diagnosis of Dyspraxia but was not diagnosed with Aspergers till we had already taken him out of school. In my outline of educational provision I stated that his education would be interest led i.e. his obsession with rocks/geology naturally would encompass Geography, Science and Maths. His interest in current affairs would encompass Citizenship, Politics, English and Languages etc. I also made it clear that the school could not provide one to one attention which my son clearly needed. I made sure to include things like swimming lessons to include physical and emotional development and hightlighted the fact that i would be concentrating on activites that allowed him to become for independant and self driven i.e. cooking, budgeting, dealing with public transport organisational skills etc, all things that I feel would not be catered for in a school enviroment and would only hinder him in learning vital tasks that are second nature to other children. I hope this helps. Feel free to PM, i'm in Glasgow too. My son is doing well despite being at school ; ) now, but I really miss him. I know the confidence and skills he was able to develop in the 3 years of home ed is the reason why he decided to go to secondary. He also knows he does not need to be there (which I remind him of) and I know this gives a great sense of freedom and choice. He is there because he wants to be - whether I like it or not : )) Good Luck Susan |

Thankyou so much Susan that helps a lot. I would really like to meet up with HE's in Glasgow as I am new to all of this even though I've been considering it for a while. I am trying to hold off til my son would start high school but don't know if he or I can last that long but I've read some horror stories on here about people having the police at their door etc. I just want to keep myself right coz there is no way my boy wll handle the hustle and bustle of secondary school although I've been told they will try and get him into an Additional Learning Needs School but it isn't guaranteed. That still doesn't solve the problem with the whole situation though. My boy has already repeated a year and although he is 11 in July he still has 2 years to go and he isn't getting any one to one help and he has dyslexia and dyscalculous too, he doesn't even know the 3 times table and unfortunately the last thing he wants to do when he comes home from school (after doing his homework) is more work with me. The weekends are his time to chill out without thinking about school so I don't push it then either, he has a really hard time at school and doesn't even want it mentioned at home. I know for a fact that he needs one to one but as per usual, it's the budgets that don't allow it so I've been told.
Thanks again x |
