I've put the article link on my Facebook. I hadn't realised it had got this far and am utterly disgusted, not least because I like Sweden and have some good friends there.

How unenlightened and illiberal of Sweden. I shall not be visiting any time soon.

Default Jonas Himmelstrand interviewed

This video recorded earlier in March has just been posted by Jonas with a request for wider distribution, and for letters supporting the family and the right to HE in Sweden to be sent to the Swedish embassies in our own countries:

It's a sobering account of what happens when you stand up to tyranny.

I have posted the link on Facebook. Mr Himmelstrand articulates not only his case but that for HE generally in a lovely calm and logical way. We should all write to our countries' Swedish Embassies in support of HE in Sweden.

Letter sent today to the Swedish Ambassador in London:

Quote:
Her Excellency Ms Nicola Clase

5th April 2012

HOME EDUCATION POLICY IN SWEDEN

Dear Ambassador Clase,

I have recently become aware that the policy of the Swedish Government towards families who decide to educate their children at home is significantly different from other countries.

Across the British Isles the law requires parents to ensure that their children receive an education. The duty of the Government in that respect is to ensure that, where the education is in a school, it is of a suitable standard. But parents are free to choose the type of education and the Government also has to uphold the legal right for parents to educate their children at home.

As I understand it home education is actively discouraged in Sweden and the policy has resulted in less that one hundred children being educated outside school.

I further understand that Sweden, like Britain, is a signatory to the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child. I believe that it is possible to over interpret that convention to the detriment of the personal freedoms of the family and child.

It is not the case that school is an appropriate form of education for every individual child particularly for very young children. Furthermore, recent research indicates that (1) 'the grounds on which universal child care is often justified, stands opposite to negative outcomes for bulk of children' and that 'child care at the youngest ages has proven to be ineffectual'.

In Britain, many famous people have been home educated. The include the Astronomer and wartime Royal Air Force navigator Sir Patrick Moore and pioneering naturalist the late Gerald Durrell.

But most significantly, Her Majesty the Queen was home educated. Can you imagine the Government in Britain disapproving of the educational choices of the Royal Family ?

In Britain we recognise that a more liberal approach to education policy allows individuals to flourish in ways that the State cannot ensure. We recognise that every child is unique and that the possibilities for all our children are enhanced by respecting the views of parents who disagree with Government policy.

I would urge you to forward this letter to the Minister who is responsible for education policy.

Yours faithfully,

(This paper is well worth a read by the way - the dogma of early years childcare is beginning to crack.)

Brilliant, Mayfly, just brilliant.

A new tagline for education: 'Every Child is Unique'.
